Discussion: Global Crises and Responses from the Left
11.00-12.30: GLOBAL CHALLENGES
Climate crisis, shifts in global power, Covid pandemic and economic shocks, ongoing wars, race, gender and class divides pushing immigration. In response populist movements of right and left varieties and mixed fortunes for socialist and social democratic parties. What lessons can be drawn from international experiences?
12.30-2.00: CAN LABOUR WIN AGAIN?
The role of ‘work’ in rebuilding Labour
What are the social forces that can bring Labour into government? Is work and the working class the right focus for a revival of socialism? Loss of traditional ‘red wall’ seats and Scotland, keeping cosmopolitan cities, winning in the Midlands and southern England: What strategy is needed to pull together a winning coalition of forces to defeat an authoritarian, populist ultra right Toryism?
Capitalism is experiencing the shocks of a pandemic and underlying tremors from earlier financial crisis. What are the opportunities and challenges for the left and Labour in forging an economy and society that works for all?
